  • Cigarette smoke contains abundant free radical molecules. The free radical molecules either of cigarette smokes may inactivate α1anti trypsin. So elastase is insufficiently inhibited by α1anti trypsin and elastase degraded elastic fibre which responsible for the elasticity of lung and airways. Therefore, the influence of various dosage of honey, an antioxidant on alveolar diameter of rat lung with sub acute method that exposed by cigarette smoke were investigated. This research made use 25 healthy male wistar rats, were randomly grouped into 5 groups of 5 each. Group I is the controlled group, group II is the group exposed to cigarette smoke for 10 weeks. Group III, IV, and V are the group exposed both to cigarette smoke and 3 dosage of honey (1.6, 1.8, and 2 ml/day). 10 weeks later the lung tissues were stained by HE. The diameters of alveoli were observed under microscope and measured using micrometer. The result shows that there are enlargement of alveolar diameter caused by cigarette smoke with sub acute method and honey may reduce the enlargement of alveolar diameter caused by cigarette smoke. The optimum dose of honey is 1.8 ml/day. When dosage of honey increased to 2 ml/day then effect were reduced. This phenomenon may be caused by pro oxidant effect of vitamin C and vitamin D on honey.
