- Vocabulary is one of the language components that holds an important part in learning English. By learning vocabulary the students will be easier to use the language in four language skills such as reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, learners faced difficulties in learning vocabulary and it affected to the student’s success in foreign language learning. Thus, strategy in learning vocabulary is needed to assist learners to acquire large vocabulary. This research was conducted to find out the strategy that the students used in learning vocabulary at MA Al-Ma’arif Tulungagung, the problem that the students faced in using the strategy in learning vocabulary at MA Al-Ma’arif Tulungagung.and the solution of the problem that the students faced in using the strategy in learning vocabulary at MA Al-Ma’arif Tulungagung. In accordance with the research method, descriptive qualitative design was employed. Seven respondents were included since the data was already sufficient. Then, the researcher used observation checklist and interview guide to collect the data. The result of the research showed that the students used guessing from context, coping strategies for production, using dictionary, spelling rules and keeping records as their strategy in learning vocabulary. Afterwards, the problems that faced the students in using the learning strategies were they not feel confident in their own understanding of the meaning of a word, they feel confused when founding a words that were homonyms and homograph, missed spelling words, and mispronounced. Thus, the students solved their problem in using the strategy by rereading, cross-checking, and watching movies.
