- This research was motivated by the students’ difficulties in mathematics learning especially in word problems. Mathematics learning is a learning that gives the understanding towards the problem-solving of word problems. The teacher needs to implement the strategy that can be used by the students in solving the word problems using clear steps. Based on that explanation, the strategy that used is learning mathematics using the scientific method, of which approach is in the form of PQRST strategy because it has scientific steps, sequence, and systematic so that it can improve the students’ critical thinking ability in solving the word problems. The kind of research that used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Data collection was conducted based on the documentation, test, and observation. The students of 8th C grade in SMP Negeri Satu Atap Merjosari Malang was used as the subjects of this research. This research used the documentation in the form of the lesson plan (RPP) to implement the learning mathematics with the scientific method using PQRST as the learning guidance. Based on the activities observation, the teacher and students implemented the PQRST that categorized as good. While the students’ ability in using PQRST strategy of word problems solving was good, in which it analyzed from the items test given. From this research result, it is suggested that the teacher can develop the learning mathematics strategies that can train the students for thinking critically, especially in solving the mathematics word problems.
