To collect the data, this study used interview, observation, and Likert scales. The interview was given to the teacher who taught speaking to the Step One Classes to elicit the data on the kinds of techniques used in teaching speaking. The data of this study were analyzed descriptively. The data from the interview and observation were analyzed by using non-numerical description. Meanwhile, the data of the students’ perception were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, i.e., a mean or percentage. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the teacher used four techniques in teaching English speaking to the Step One Class at The Daffodils Course, Pare-Kediri. The techniques included small group (discussion, debate), speeches, role play, and audio taped techniques. The teacher used more than one technique of teaching speaking in one meeting. Sometimes the teacher applied the audio taped techniques by using a tape recorder and scripts. The teacher used English 50%-70% more than Indonesian language to give an emphasis or to make the students understand clearly to the topic learned in the classroom. The students generally had very positive perception toward the techniques applied by the teacher in teaching speaking to the Step One Class at The Daffodils Course, Pare-Kediri.
