The interview was given to the teacher who taught speaking to the Step One Classes to elicit the data on the kinds of techniques used in teaching speaking. The non-participant observation was used to get the data on the implementation of techniques of teaching English speaking. The techniques included small group (discussion, debate), speeches, role play, and audio taped techniques. The teacher used more than one technique of teaching speaking in one meeting. Sometimes the teacher applied the audio taped techniques by using a tape recorder and scripts. The teacher used English 50%-70% more than Indonesian language to give an emphasis or to make the students understand clearly to the topic learned in the classroom.
