- Keyword : Teaching English, Vocational High School, Material Development English is important to be learned as an international language. Indonesia requires students in any level of schools to learn English starting from Elementary up to college levels. The English that are taught are different based on the level of school and also the majors of the class. English for Elementary School is surely different with English for Secondary, and English for Secondary School is different with English in Vocational High School. In teaching English for Vocational High School, the teacher is required to develop the material to achieve the learningÂ’s goal by considering the syllabus, principles, the majors and the studentsÂ’ characteristics. Developing materials is needed to make the students attracted in learning English. This research aims to describe how the teacher developed the material in teaching English and also how the studentsÂ’ response toward the material. In conducting this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research design to describe how the teacher developed the materials in teaching English for the second grade students at Vocational High School, Probolinggo and also the studentsÂ’ responses toward the materials. The subject of this research was the English teacher of Light Vehicle Engineering class at Kotaanyar Vocational High School, Probolinggo. The data were collected through three instruments they were interview, observation and questionnaires. The result of this research showed that teacher developed the materials through three phases they were designing, implementing and evaluating. In Design process, the teacher considered the syllabus as the reference, matched it with the studentsÂ’ characteristics and also looking at the principles of materials development. The studentsÂ’ responses that were collected from questionnaires showed that most of the students gave positive responses towards the material that was developed by the teacher. By getting positive response, we can conclude that the materials that were developed by the teacher were successfully attracted the studentsÂ’ interest in learning English and made them easy in absorbing the materials.
