- This study is aimed to know the development of students� reading comprehensions of descriptive text for the first year class students of SMA Muhammadiyah 25 Setiabudi Pamulang by using Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA). In addition, this study is also aimed to describe the implementation of DRTA in developing students� reading comprehensions of descriptive text. The problem raised in the research is about low scores of reading comprehensions of descriptive text gotten by first year class students of SMA Muhammadiyah 25 Setiabudi Pamulang. Thus, the students cannot pass the minimal level criterion (KKM). This study is categorized as the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method in which to identify and to solve the problem on students� reading comprehension. In this Classroom Action Research, the writer implements the Kemmis, McTaggart design consisting of four phases (Plan, Action, observe, and reflect). The subject of the research are students at grade 10th, the class X-1 of SMA Muhammadiyah 25 Setiabudi Pamulang, academic year 2011/2012. The number of the students is 28. Instruments used in the research are test, observation sheet and interview. Two techniques are used in collecting data in the research, the qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data consisted of observation within the physical activity in the classroom and interview. The quantitative data used test. In analyzing qualitative data, rating scale table is used to measure the observations of students� activities during teaching learning process. Meanwhile, in analyzing the numerical data, some statistical formulas are used. The findings of this study are: 1. Related to the test result, there are 7.14% or 2 students passing KKM in the before cycle test, 39.28% or 11 students passing KKM in cycle 1 test and 92.85% or 26 students passing KKM in cycle 2 test. 2. Related to the observation result, the students were more active and interested in learning reading activity in the classroom by using DRTA. 3. Related to the interview result, it could be known that the students� reading comprehension in term of descriptive text has been improved and teacher was helped in finding the appropriate strategy in teaching reading descriptive text
