- The purpose of this study is to find out (1) the common errors made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 12 Kota Tangerang in descriptive writing, (2) the percentages of grammatical errors made by the students, and (3) the possible sources of their errors. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research carried out 39 students in class 8.1 of SMPN 12 Kota Tangerang as the sample. The sampling technique used in this research was random purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by asking the students to describe a certain picture and by conducting an informal interview with some students. This research used data analyzing technique stated by Gass and Selinker, which was divided into five steps: (1) collecting the data; (2) identifying the data; (3) classifying the data; (4) quantifying the data; (5) analyzing source of error. In describing the data, the researcher used surface strategy taxonomy stated by Dulay. Total errors of each kind of error were 306 errors, and misformation errors has the highest frequency with 132 errors or 43,14%, and the lowest frequency was misordering errors with 17 errors or 5,55%. The sources of students errors were divided into three, namely: interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, and context learning. From the data result, it could be inferred that students’ grammatical errors were mostly caused by intralingual transfer, where the students were lack understanding of various grammatical rules in English writing.
