- Forest degradation had impact on decreasing springs discharge. The objective of research was to formulate appropriate technique of protecting springs at Forest Area With Special Purpose (KHDTK)Rarung. Methodology of research was a) Mapping spring and its water catchment area; b) Identifying soil type, slope and vegetation on water catchment areas; c) Measuring rainfall depth, springs discharge and water quality; d) Vegetation enrinching on water catchment area. The results showed soil permeability class of 19.59-38.78 cm/h and sand fraction of 75-78% which potentially increased high soil nutrient leaching and soil water pollution through high infiltration rate. Springs discharge mean was counted small to medium (0.0014-0.032 m3/sec), topography of steep to very steep with impermeable layer under soil layer caused high landslide risk. The analyses showed low correlation of springs discharge per m2 to rainfall depth (R2=-0.0002%). Although vegetation density showed high correlation to springs discharge (R2= 50.2%), but there was a high autcorrelation to soil organic matter (R2= 98.5%). Regression test results indicated only soil organic matter was considered to had impact to springs discharge (R2= -64.4%). The results indicated the need to protect the springs at KHDTK Rarung by strengthening riverbank and landslide control; avoiding application of insecticide/pesticide on land management; and carried out land management to improve soil water potential and reduce soil nutrient leaching by enhancing soil organic matter content.
