  • This is an academic final course research paper ("Service, the leitmotiv of reference librarians") where I highlight a very important concept for the work of the reference librarian: service. I make a comparison between the term leitmotiv (the central, dominant and constant theme or motive in music, literature and film making) with that of library service, since service must be the leitmotiv of the reference librarian: the central, dominant and constant motive or theme in his daily work. In the practicum experience I included an assessment of the reference services at the Central Library of the University of Monterrey (UDEM), Nuevo Leon, Mexico. I presented this work for the course "Library Management I" on the 4th semester of the of the Library and Information Science Program at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letter at the Nuevo Leon Autonomous University, Mexico, on May 18, 1995 for the Professor Mr. Vicente Javier Sáenz Cirlos, Master in Library Science (RIP, b. April 10, 1934 - d. February 12, 1997), Director of the Central Library at UDEM. I thank maily Professor Saenz Cirlos for his guidance in the course and for this work, as well as Ms. Lilia Veronica Alanis Loera, lecturer of Reference course at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, UANL and reference librarian at UDEM, who gave me support for the conduction of the practicum of this work.
