  • This study aims to improve the character of the fifth grade students of elementary school of Gembongan Sentolo Kulonprogo Yogyakarta through the application of guided discovery approach. This study was Classroom Action Research. The Subject was 18 people of the fifth grade students of elementary school Gembongan Sentolo Kulonprogo Yogyakarta in academic year 2009/2010. The study was conducted in 3 cycles consisting of 4 stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. Type of action in this research is the application of guided discovery approach and the result is the improvement of student character limited by the implementation of the value of godly obedience, responsibility, cooperation, and creativity. The instrument used is the observation sheet of value implementation, student questionnaire sheet and parent’s questionnaire sheet. The Observation sheets and questionnaires were analyzed with descriptive quantitative. The criterion for success in this study is divided into two, qualitatively and quantitatively. In the terms of qualitative, the action is successful if guided discovery approach can be implemented the four values, while quantitatively, the success be seen from the average score of the observation of the implementation of the four values in the high category has reached more than 75%. The results showed that the guided discovery approach can be used to improve the character of students. The Increasing of the values of obedience worship successive cycles I, II, and III are indicated by the percentage of students who are able to achieve high category at 72.22%, 77.78% and 88.89%. The Value of responsible is 33.34%, 72.22% and 83.34%. The value cooperation is 44.45%, 61.11%, and 83.33%. The Value of creativity is 33.334%, 50.00%, and 77.78%. Thus, the application of guided discovery approach to learn science subject can improve the student character of the fifth Grade students in elementary school Gembongan, Sentolo, Kulonprogo Yogyakarta.
