characterized by increasing number of leukocytes GCF which produce cytokines
that capable to destruction of the host tissue. Fixed orthodontic appliance user had
a greater tendency towards the occurrence of gingival inflammation. The
mangosteen pericarps (Garcinia mangostana L.) containsxantonewhich have antiinflammatory
activity. The purpose of this study was todetermine the effect of
consumingmangosteen pericarps extract supplement (Garcinia mangostana L.) to
reduce gingival inflammation index in fixedorthodontic patient with number of
leukocyte GCF count.
Twenty subjects of fixed orthodontic patient were then divided into two
groups: 10 subjects in the treatment group and 10 subjects in the control
groupwereselected based on the criteria of inclusion: age 18-24 years old, was
have gingival inflammation from mild to moderate, use fixed orthodontic
appliance on the finishing phase. Subjects in both groups were given an initial
therapy (scaling), then the treatment group consumed mangosteen pericarp extract
supplements with a frequency of 3 times of 2 capsules for 7 days. Sampling GCF
in both groups were did on day 0 and day 8 on regio anterior lower as much as 3
sample GCF of each subject. Leukocytes was seen from the sample with a reagent
staining results Turk through the microscope with a magnification of 400 times.
The mean reduction number of leukocytes was analyzed usingthe Independent TTest.
The results showed that the effect of consumingmangosteen pericarp
extract supplements (Garciniamangostana L.) towards a decrease in the number
of leukocytes GCF was significant (p<0,05).The conclusions of this research was
consumption mangosteen pericarps extract supplement (Garcinia mangostana L.)
effect significantly to decrease the inflammation of the gingiva at the fixed
