  • Mangosteen peel contains xanton derivatives (α-mangostin) which has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. In order to facilitate its use then made into a gel formulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the gel formula extract mangosteen peel optimum use of HPMC (Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose) as a gelling agent and propylene glycol as a humectant by factorial design method. Gel evaluation was conducted on the organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, adhesion test, spread test, and physical stability for 1 month and test of antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with well diffusion method. Formula evaluation results were then analyzed using a factorial design method and one sample t-test to compare the predicted results with the optimum formula experimental verification. Optimum gel stability test results were analyzed with independent samples T Test. The results showed that the optimum gel formula mangosteen peel extract is HPMC 14% and 20% propylene glycol. HPMC combination of 14% and 20% propylene glycol can increase the viscosity, pH, adhesion and antibacterial activity and can decrease the spread gel. Optimum gel mangosteen peel extract stored for 1 month had a pH, adhesion, dispersive power, and the antibacterial activity is quite stable, while the viscosity of the gel is less stable.
