Improving the Reading Comprehension Ability of the Students through Directed Reading Thinking Activity Strategy

  • Reading is one of the four skills in language taught integratedly with the other three skills. As a language skill, reading has more implication than the other skills. The objective of the research is to find a model and procedure of the DRTA strategy which is appropriate to improve the students’ reading comprehension at English language education study program, FKIP Tadulako University. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) that aimed to improe the students’ reading comprehension specifically in reading narrative text through DRTA strategy (Directed Reading Thinking Activity). The result of DRTA strategy showed that the students’ reading comprehension was improved. The significant difference can be showed through the data of students’ score of reading comprehension course which reach the target (75 dalam rentang 0 s.d 100). At the pre-test, there were 8 students or 24% out of 30 students that reached the target score, in cycle I, there were 17 students or 48% that reached the target score; finally in cycle II, there were 22 students or 67% out of 30 students that reached the target score. Besides that, the result showed that DRTA strategy was effective to increase the students’ activeness and involvement in the classroom.Key Words: Improve, Reading Comprehension, Directed Reading, Thinking, Activity, Strategy
