  • The incidence of self-injurious behavior has no geographic, cultural, or class boundaries. Someone’s emotional states influenced the use of self-injury. Self-injurious behavior is associated with the lack of the ability to effectively regulate emotions. Self-injury served as a strategy to cope emotional pain. This research explores the emotional dynamic of self-injured individuals based on addiction theory of Alderman. This qualitative research used depth-interviews on 6 subjects and represents (age 20 to 25 years). The results indicate that subjects tend to (a) hide their emotions and problems before they engage with self injurious behavior. (b) feel overwhelmed with negative emotions, (c) experiences dissociation to alter the limitations of the emotional control, (d) experiences a sense of relief and calm, and (e) experiences shame and guilt for the act.
