- Today, aquaculture has become an industrial activities with the increasing of fish production concerned both quantity and quality. The source of water is one of the main supporting components in aquaculture activities. However, water sources for fish farming, i.e ex-tin minning waters or kolong in Bangka Belitung Islands contain heavy metals and low pH, must be treated first since lead (Pb) is one of the main non-essential minerals contained in the water. Fish culture in aqueous media with low pH containing lead metal is very risky since it has led to the death of fishes. Compost is one of matter that can be used to minimize lead metal and raise pH in the water. Minimization of lead by compost occurs through cation exchange, electrostatic binding, complexs binding and chelate, while the increase in pH occurs through adsorption of H+ ions in water by composting. In this research, lead-containing waters with its low pH condition were treated with the compost of banana stem at the level of 0 gr/l (control), 5 gr/l, 9 gr/l, and 13 gr/l. The experiments were done for 24 hours in aerated conditions. Furthermore, after 24 hours, the water were separated from the compost and used for catfish (Clarias gariepinus) seed culture in 30 days. The results showed that the best level of banana stems compost was 9 gr/l. At its level was able to decrease the concentration of lead from 6.7964 mg/l to 0.2462 mg /l, and increase the pH from 2.9 to 6.01. Lead concentration in the meat of the cultivated seed were 0.0049 mg/ kg and it is safe based on SNI 7387:2009. The average of survival rate and daily growth rate of the fishes was 100% and 10.69%, respectively.
