  • Starved periodically can lead compensatory growth. Digestibility and absorption of feed nutrients in fish intestines can be further enhanced by the addition of beneficial microbes (probiotics). The combination of starved periodically and refeeding using probiotic feed is expected to further increase the growth and efficiency of feed utilization in catfish. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of probiotics feed on catfish starved periodically to the growth and feed efficiency. This research method used completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications; P0: catfish were fed without probiotics daily, P1: catfish were starved periodically and refeeding without probiotic and P2: catfish were starved periodically and refeeding with probiotic feed. This research was conducted in Laboratorium Kolam Percobaan, Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from September to October 2018. Parameters observed include fish growth, specific growth rate, feed convertion ratio, feed efficiency, survival rate and water quality. The result showed that catfish were starved periodically and refeeding with probiotic (P2) was the best treatment. Feed efficiency 94.17%, feed convertion ratio 1.06, survival rate 100%, absolute growth of weight 7.18 g, absolute growth of lenght 4.80 cm, specific growth rate of weight 3.53%.day-1 and spesific growth rate of lenght 1.64%.day-1. Water quality was in tolerance range for Catfish rearing which water temperature was about 27.0-31.50C, pH 5.9-7.6, dissolved oxygen 3.9-6.4 mg.L-1 and ammonia 0.04-0.019 mg.L-1.
