- In this research, antidiabetic activity test of ethanolic extract kenikir’s leaves (Cosmos caudatus H. B. K.) to rats induced by alloxan has been done. This research was aimed to determine the potential of kenikir’s leaves on blood glucose levels decrease in rats induced by alloxan. Male albino wistar rats were used as animal models which divided into six groups, normal group (aquadest), negative control group (sodium CMC 0.5%), positive control group (insulin 1 IU/kgBW), and three treated group (ethanolic extract kenikir’s leaves 200 mg/kgBW, 400 mg/kgBW, and 800 mg/kgBW). The animal models were defined as diabetic when rats blood glucose level >200 mg/dL after induced intraperitoneally by alloxan 130 mg/kgBW every three days for twelve days. Blood glucose levels are measured using DTN-410-K photometer, on 0th, 5th, 10th, and 15th day. The average result of AUC0-15 and percentage of decreasing blood glucose levels was 852.42% and 51.20% for positive control group, and three treatment group (871.7% and 47.75% for treated group I (200 mg/kgBW); 846.77% and 52.22% for treated group II (400 mg/kgBW); and 823.63% and 56.37% for treated group III (800 mg/kgBW). This point indicated that the ethanolic extract of kenikir’s leaves has an antidiabetic activity and there is no significant difference compared with insulin (p>0.05). According to the relation between percentage of blood glucose decrease level with dose, the value of ED50 of ethanolic extract of kenikir’s leaves is 333 mg/kgBW.
