- Background: Cognitive function defined as intelligence and conscious mental activity which have broad understanding such as thinking, remembering, learning, using language, attention ability, memory, consideration, problem solving, and executive abilities such as planning, evaluating, monitoring and evaluating. One of the main factors that influence cognitive function is nutrient intake. Nutrient intake that needed to be considered including omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids and most importantly omega-3 fatty acids such as Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) which are macro nutrients. The use of omega-3 supplements such as fish oil is still the main alternative, unfortunately the use of fish oil is less effective because the price is too expensive that it cannot be reached by all economic circles, even though omega-3 is widely contained in fish, one of which is red snake head fish. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the administration of red snakehead fish oil (Channa micropeltes) on the cognitive function of male swiss webster mice (Mus musculus L.). Methods: This research is an experimental research using the pre-posttest design with control group design. The research subject was male swiss webster mice (Mus musculus L.), age 4-10 weeks, weight 20-35 grams. The number of research subjects was 30 mice divided into 5 randomly selected groups, which is positive control (K1), negative control (K2), dose I of red snakehead fish oil 5% (K3), dose II red snakehead fish oil 10% (K4 ) and dose III of red snakehead fish oil 20% (K5) of 6 mice on each groups. The MWM test was conducted twice, the pretest and posttest. The pretest MWM test was carried out on 0th day, and the posttest MWM test was carried out on the 18th day. Results: Administration of red snake head fish oil for 14 days (p <0.05) reduced latency time at high doses (20%). Meanwhile, groups with low and medium doses (5% and 10%) did not show the effect of red snakehead fish oil on latency time. Conclusion: Red snakehead fish oil (Channa micropeltes), a dose of 20% improves cognitive function of male swiss webster mice (Mus musculus L.).
