- The research about characterization of Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) with Pt-Ru/C catalyst using Catalyst-Coated Membrane (CCM) method and its performance test in Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) has been done. The catalysts were made by using a mixture of platinum and ruthenium (III) nitrosyl nitrate solution that was sprayed upon membranes using CCM method. This mixture forms various compotition of Pt-Ru/C catalyst with the percentage of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% Pt’s loading against Ru. The electrodes were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and electrical conductivity. The results of XRD analysis showed carbon was at position 2 = 20-30o, peak of platinum was at position 2 = 39,8-40,2o and peak of ruthenium at position 2 = 52-55o. The test result of catalytic activity with Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA) method showed the highest of catalyst active surface area at Pt-Ru/C electrode with a ratio of Pt:Ru 40% was 6,572 x 10-4 m2/gram and the results of conductivity analysis was 0.0033 S/cm. The performance test in DMFC obtained the higest value of the OCV (open circuit voltage) and the values of the current and voltage when given the resistor varies. The highest value of the OCV with a ratio of Pt:Ru 40% was at 8,36 mV.
