  • White galangal (Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd) was one of the plants who had high triterpenoid compound. Triterpenoid potentially created an enzyme Na+/K+-ATPase to depolarization and increased the levels calcium intracell in endoplasmic reticulum. Increased calcium will trigger the release of acetylcholine continuously. Increased acetylcholine release will be followed by an increase in muscarinic receptor activity so that it will continuously facilitate cholinergic neuron in the brain which causes an increase in memory function. The research was conducted to investigate effect of ethanol extract white galangal (Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd) to increase memory in white male mice in Swiss-Webster strains inhibited by scopolamine using passive evasion test. The research used 36 mice were divided into 6 groups. First group was a normal control without extracts and scopolamine inhibitors. Positive control was given with 500 mg/kgBW piracetam, negative control got 1% Sodium CMC, and the D1, D2, and D3 test groups were given with ethanol extract white galangal rhizome with 200 mg/kgBW, 400 mg/kgBW, and 800 mg/kgBW oral doses for 21 days. Research was obtained by passive avoidance test. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and continued with LSD test with 95% confidence level. The results showed that the three doses of the extract have increased memory function, it marked by a significant score of retention duration in the normal and negative control group (p <0.05), but there was no difference between the three doses of the test with piracetam 500 mg/kgBW (p>0.05). Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that the three doses of ethanol extract of white galangal rhizome increased the memory function in white male Swiss-Webster mice induced by scopolamine with 200 mg/kgBW dose was show the best effect.
