HUBUNGAN BEBAN CAREGIVER TERHADAP KEJADIAN DEPRESI PADA CAREGIVER YANG BEKERJA DI PANTI TRESNA WERDHA PALEMBANG

- Introduction. Social workers working at nursing homes are defined as formal caregivers who are obligated to improve the quality life of the elderly residents. The tasks carried out by the caregiver indirectly cause a psychological impact called the caregiver burden. There have been several previous studies of informal caregivers regarding caregiver burden on the occurence of depression. However, there is not much research that analyzes the relationship in formal caregivers. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of caregiver burden and occurence of depression among formal caregivers who works at nursing homes in Palembang. Method. This analytic observational study with a cross sectional approach was conducted in November 2018. The sample of this study was caregivers who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria who works at Panti Tresna Werdha Teratai Palembang, Panti Werdha Dharma Bakti Palembang, and Yayasan Sosial Sukamaju Palembang. Data were obtained through filling the Zarit Burden Interview questionnaire which consists of 17 modified questions and the Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) questionnaire consisting of 20 question items, then analyzed by Fisher Exact test using SPSS version 25. Result. There were 38 caregivers who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria in this study, with majority had characteristics of women, aged 36-45 years, living in Palembang, married, graduated from high school, working more than a year, in mixed wards, taking care of more than 32 elderly people, get a vacation less than 8 days a month and a salary below the UMK of Palembang. A total of 23 people (60.5%) experienced a caregiver burden in the range of mild burden and 11 people (28.9%) experienced incidence of depression. There was a significant relationship between caregiver burden and the incidence of depression in caregivers (p = 0,000). Conclusion. There was a significant association between caregiver burden and occurence of depression among caregivers working at nursing homes in Palembang.
