- In the research of testing antihyperlipidemic activity of ethanol extract of Senna alata leaf to male Wistar rats induced with propyltiouracil has been done. The purpose of the research is to find out the effect of ethanol extract of Senna alata leaf to the decreased total amount of cholesterol and LDL (low density lipoprotein) level and to see the ED50 from the variation dose of Senna alata leaf. Senna alata contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and phenolics that have antihyperlipidemic activity. Wistar male rats were divided into 5 groups, negative control (sodium CMC 0,5%), positive control was given simvastatin 0.193 mg/kgBW, and 3 dosage treatment groups with variation dose of Senna alata ethanol extract of 200, 400, and 800 mg/kgBW. The hyperlipidemia induction was augmented with high fat and propylthiouracil for 14 days then was induced for 14 days with ethanol extract of Senna alata, and weighing the weight. The average total of cholesterol level after fat induction was 93.29 mg/dL. Average level of LDL after induction was 31.35 mg/dL. The average result of weight after induction was 234.13 g. The research result found that the largest decrease in cholesterol and LDL levels were found in the largest dose of 800 mg/kgBW with a decrease of 52.74 ± 1.62 mg/dL for total cholesterol and 16.69 ± 0.09 mg/dL for LDL. Based on the relation between the decreased percentage of cholesterol level as well as the LDL level to dose, the ED50 value of ethanol extract of Senna alata was 770.75 mg/kgBW for total of cholesterol and to reduce the LDL level is 777.56 mg/kgBW. The final result indicated that ethanol extract of Senna alata possesed antihyperlipidemic effect, which showed by different significance between the negative control and the treatment group (p<0.05).
