  • Background : Until now caries is still a major problem in the oral cavity especially in the children. High incident of caries can be caused by the lack of knowledge about oral health. Knowledge of dental health can directly affect and influence the attitude and behavior of children in maintaining their oral health. According to Basic Health Research on elementary school-age children (10-14 years old), the percentage of children who brushes their teeth at the right time is decreasing from 7.3% in 2007 to just 1.3% in 2013. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between knowledge of dental health and dental health status of fifth grade student in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 2 Palembang. Methods : The study was an observational analytic with cross-sectional design. Total sample used in this study were 247 fifth grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 2 Palembang. Data was collected using questionnaires and clinical examination of the oral cavity to determine the DMF-T index. The data were crosstabulated and analyzed using chi-square test. Results : Chi-square statistical test showed a significant correlation between dental health knowledge and dental health status (p=0,000). Conclusion : There is a significant correlation between dental health knowledge and dental health status.
