  • A study have been done to investigate the effect of ethanol extract of bangle rhizome (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) on memory enhancement of white male mice Swiss-Webster strain using passive avoidance test method. Bangle rhizome contain triterpenoid and phenolic compounds that potentially improve the function of memory. This research conducted include characterization of extract, determination of extract memory enhancement activity by calculating parameters of long retention and determination the best doses of extract to improve memory. Mice were used as animal models which were divided into 6 groups, normal group, positive control with piracetam 500 mg/kgBW, negative control with sodium CMC 1% and 3 groups of bangle rhizome ethanol extract at doses 120, 240 and 480 mg/kgBW orally. All treatment groups were induced with scopolamine 3 mg/kgBW intraperitoneally except normal group. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and LSD test with 95% confidence level. The result of extract characterization showed water content 7.769%, shrinkage drying 8.473%, water soluble content 5.500%, ethanol soluble extract 89.500%, total ash content 0.922% and acid unsaturated ash content 0.212%. This research showed that average of long retention for positive control 570.700 seconds, negative control 178.320 seconds and 3 treatment groups (120, 240, and 480 mg/kgBW) were 588.525, 588.530 and 589.800 seconds. In conclusion, ethanol extract of bangle rhizome able to improve mice memory. Ethanol extract of bangle rhizome at dose 480 mg/kgBW showed the best effect to improve memory because it had the greatest long retention.
