  • The danger of UVA and UVB exposure can cause skin damage, so sunscreen is needed to protect the skin. Petai pods (Parkia speciosa Hassk.) contains flavonoid compounds that can absorb UV radiation so that it can be used as a protective agent for the skin from UV radiation. This research aims to determine the effect of variations in extract concentration and the effect of spray lotion base on the value of sun protection factor (SPF) in the preparation of sunscreen spray lotion ethanol extract of petai pods. Petai pods extract was obtained by maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. Concentration of extract used is 2.5, 5, and 7.5%. Physical evaluation of the preparation was carried out by observing organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, dispersion, protection, adhesion, washability, spraying pattern, pump delivery, and stability. The results of physical properties testing showed that spray lotion had fulfilled the requirements, but had poor adhesion. Determination of SPF values was carried out in vitro with UV-Vis spectrophotometer using the Petro equation. The test results showed that the increase in concentration was directly proportional to the increase in SPF value, but the SPF extract decreased after it was made into a spray lotion. SPF extract value is equivalent to formula II, III, and IV respectively 3.666 (minimum protection), 7.131 (extra protection), and 12, 395 (maximum protection), while the SPF value of Formula I to IV is 1.060 (ineffective), 1,821 (ineffective), 4,377 (moderate protection), and 7,834 (extra protection). Stability testing on sun exposure shows that spray lotion is less stable than extract and market sunscreen with %SPF reduction of 26.104%. Based on the results of this research, ethanol extract of petai pods in spray lotion can provide extra protection against UV radiation, but less stable against sun exposure.
