- Background: Lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) is a very potential plant to be developed as a nutritious plant. This is because the chemical components contained in lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) include flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, essential oils, and saponins that have antimicrobial activity. The use of lime juice (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) as an alternative to hand washing and studies about antibacterial contained in it, raises the question of the effectiveness of lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) as an antiseptic agent in hand washing. The purpose of this study is compare the effectiveness of hand washing using plain water, lime juice (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle), and 70% alcohol. Methods: This study is a laboratory experimental study using a simple experimental design (Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design). Five students of the Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University is divided into five groups. Three groups were given lime juice with concentration variations of 50%, 75%, and 100%. Another group was a positive control group with 70% alcohol and negative control given aquadest. Analysis of the number of colonies or rates of germs is done by sampling on the surface of the subject's palm by means of swabs using sterile swab cotton. Results: In general, there is a decrease in the number of colonies or rates of germson hand washing using lime juice. However, there was no statistically significant difference except in the 75% postest lime group in the first minute. Conclusion: Lime concentration 75% effective as an antiseptic where there is a difference in the number of colonies or rates of pretest bacteria with the first minute postest.
