  • he marriage in the Toba Batak custom is an exogamy marriage, that is the marriage of the Batak people who are not one clan. A married woman will leave her family and follow her husband's clan. It has the aim to obtain and continue the descendants of the male clan, in accordance with the Patrilineal Batak culture system that is the lineage inherited from boys. The form of marriage that is often used in Batak Toba traditional marriages is an honest marriage that is marriage that is preceded by honest payment or in the Batak Toba tradition called sinamot. At first the sinamot was not in the form of money, but in the form of objects that were considered meaningful. Over time the sinamot changed the concept can be given in the form of money and now everyone interprets the sinamot as a sale and purchase transaction, whereas before sinamot was in the form of sinamot money, it was interpreted as a condemnation for the family of women. This illustration shows the existence of a different definition of sinamot among the people. The symbolic meaning contained therein and the true meaning of sinamot with the reality there is a shift in meaning. The purpose of this study is to find out and analyze the meaning of Sinamot in female families in the Toba Batak Tribe Marriage System in Kalang Village, Sidikalang Subdistrict, Dairi Regency and To find out the factors that cause a shift in the meaning of sinamot in the marriage system of the Batak Toba tribe in Kalang Village, Sidikalang District Dairi Regency. The method used by the author is Juridical-Empirical. The results of the study suggest that sinamot should be interpreted as a form of respect for women or women's families that will belong to male families.
