  • Palembang has a valuable tradition and culture of golden art crafts, namely art of weaving, carving, and lauker. The Palembang’s craft art has included in the world-recognized cultural heritage of UNESCO. It increases the trading value of the Palembang craft. Therefore, it needs a building center for craft and arts to introduce, educate, and trade it also to make community and consumers notice, recognize, and appreciate the Palembang art. The project final design a gallery for exhibiting, education, and recreation of the Palembang art and craft. The design applies the concept of neo-vernacular architecture, which means as a building gate of regional traditions and culture in modernization shape. The design is an application of the philosophy of local architecture into a modern building. The architectural concept combines the architecture of rumah limas into building with current functions, needs, and conditions. The site design mimics the atmosphere of waterfront architecture with retention pool surrounding it like the past “rumah limas” on a riverfront. The building also adopts architecture three elements of the cultural philosophy, called grandeur, simplicity, and harmony. The structure of the stilt house, the hallmark of the “rumah limas”, applied with poles arranged parallel to get appearance a lifting building. It also becomes a roof structure and double skin. The gallery building follows the philosophy of the limas house that simple on the exterior and magnificent in the interior. The simplicity is applied by creating simple facades with minim ornament while the interior of the main room is designed with spacious room, high ceiling, and full of ornament.
