  • Banana bunchy top disease, also known as banana stunt disease, is a very important disease in banana producing countries all over the world. The disease is devastating because the infected plant would never produce fruit. The disease is transmitted by its insect vector called Pentalonia nigronervosa persistently. The insect is able to live and breed on alternative hosts belong to Family Zingiberaceae and Araceae. Considering the abundance of those plant surrounding banana plantation, it is necessary to understand the role of the alternative host of P. nigronervosa in the transmission of banana bunchy top virus. In this research, three species of zingiberaceous crops were used, namely greater galangal, turmeric and Javanese ginger. The objective of the research was to reveal the role of these alternative host of P. nigronervosa in the reduction or elimination infectivity of infective P. nigronerosa. The results showed that infective P. nigronerosa infested on the three zingiberaceous crops for a week still had their ability to transmit banana bunchy top virus, showed by the banana bunchy top virus infection symptoms such as Mors code, leaf narrowing and bunchy top, even though not all symptoms appear on infected plants. Greater galangal appeared to have the lowest ability to reduce the infectivity of P. nigronervosa compared to the other two zingiberaceious crops, turmeric and Javanese ginger. This could be seen in the higher infection frequency and the appearance of all specific symptoms. Bunchy top symptom appeared in very low frequency because naturally the symptom appear long after the initial infection.
