- The regulation on environmental information has been enforcing since some years ago, so called “Undang-undang no 23 tahun 1997 tentang pengelolaan lingkungan hidup” (Environmental Act Number 23,1997). The media especially newspapers and magazines as one of the tools of socialization on environment should have responsibility in distributing the environment information. At least, help the society as the potential victim of environmental pollution. The purpose of this research is to find out how the media carry out their function as the sources of environment information and understanding the obstacles in providing that information. This research has been done in South Sumatera. Data were collected by using interview and distributed the open and close questioner toward the reader of SRIWIJAYA POST and KOMPAS. Samples are determined with purposive sampling method. Data were analyzed qualitatively. The findings showed that in carry out their function as social control institutions, the media provide critical comments toward society. There are two obstacles in providing the environmental information such as internal and external obstacles.
