  • In the world of electricity, insulating oil is widely used in high voltage equipment such as power transformers that function as a separator between conductors that are voltage and as a cooling medium. Insulating oil is usually made from petroleum which is a non-renewable natural resource. Now a lot of research has been done to find alternatives to liquid insulation, one of which is vegetable-based oils such as virgin coconut oil. In this study the breakdown voltage test was carried out using ball electrodes on virgin coconut oil which had been heated by several temperature variations and the addition of titanium dioxide compounds. This study also tested the water content, viscosity, and flash point of virgin coconut oil, to determine its effect on the value of breakdown voltage. Based on the research that has been done, the breakdown voltage value of virgin coconut oil has conform the standards of IEC 60296 transformer oil standard. The highest breakdown voltage obtained was 46 kV / 2.5 mm. However, virgin coconut oil is not worthy to be used as an alternative liquid insulating material, because the water content and viscosity values do not conform the IEC 60296 standard, even though the flash point value conforms the standard. The test results show that the addition of titanium dioxide compounds will increase the breakdown voltage and viscosity, while the water content and flash point values will decrease. When the higher temperature used for the sample heating process, the breakdown voltage value will increase, while the water content, viscosity, and flash point will decrease.
