  • The research area is in the District of Lawang Kidul, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra which is located at 1030 52 '43.2 "BT - 1030 50' 03.4 '' BT and 030 47 '37.2" LS - 030 50' 19.2 '' with an area of 25 km2 . The method used in this study is field observation and laboratory analysis, from the results of field observations obtained four coal samples that are considered representative enough for further analysis then from the four samples conducted laboratory analysis in the form of proximate analysis in the form of moisture content, ash content, volatile matter and fixed carbon based on standardization from ASTM (American Society for Testing & Materials). The study area is divided into three geomorphic units, namely low denuded hills (PRD), and river canal units (SKS). The stratigraphy of the study area consists of two formations, namely the Middle Miocene-Late Miocene Airbenakat Formation in the form of shale rocks deposited in the Transition-Neritic environment and the Late Miocene-Muaraenim Formation in the Late Miocene-Pliocene form of sandstone lithology, claystone, deposited coal in the shallow sea - transition area. The developing geological structure is the syncline and anticline folds that can be seen from the position of the layer. In the research area has a fairly large commodity in the mining sector. One of the big mining commodities, namely coal mining, coal in the study area is included in the Muaraenim Formation. Results The study area consisted of the Airbenakat Formation and the Muaraenim Formation influenced by tides and then from laboratory analysis it was found that the quality of coal in the study area was included in low-grade coal based on international classifications of in-seam coals.
