  • The effect of quenching heat treatment is to increase the hardness of the steel with a quick dip and combined with a controlled palm oil cooling medium which makes the hardness evenly distributed on the steel. In this process the temperature used in austenite temperature varies from 800oC, 950oC, and 1150oC with heating time at the desired temperature of 10 minutes and then cooled with palm oil until the steel returns to room temperature. Then the mechanical properties tested in this study are the Vickers physical strength test. The test results show that the highest hardness value is 202,536 kgf / mm2 after quenching at 1150oC and the lowest hardness value is 197.976 kgf / mm2 after quenching at 800oC. From the results of this study it was concluded that in the quenching process, temperature is very influential to increase medium carbon steel hardness. The higher the temperature used the higher the value of the steel hardness as long as the temperature remains at austenite temperature.
