  • Lightning is a natural phenomenon that occurs due to electrical discharges both positive and negative charges which contained within the cloud. The currents generated by lightning event has an enormous magnitude. That is the reason that makes lightning as a one of big potential for damaging components in a electrical system when lightning strike the electrical system itself, for example is Light Rail Transit (LRT) electrical system. There are many previous researches which related to direct lightning strike event to LRT electrical system. Most of these researches discussed about the impact that occur due to direct lightning strike on electrical supply such as third rail (3rd rail), and Overhead Contact System. However, there have been not many researches on direct lightning strike to LRT train set. In this research there is a simulation conducted using Analysis Transient Program/Electromagnetic Transient Program (ATP/EMTP) software which aims to see the impact that occur due to direct lightning strike to Palembang City LRT train set. The lightning standard used in this research is the Heidler lightning standard with a peak current of 30 kA with front time of 1.2 μs and tail time of 50 μs. Based on this research, there is a voltage increase up to 931,62 kV on the body of LRT train set where the lightning strike. Furthermore, there is also a voltage increase in the traction motors that are in each Motor Car (MC) of LRT train set, especially those that have the closest distance to the strike point. The highest voltage increase occurs in the traction motor near the strike point up to 27,57 kV. Meanwhile for the traction motors that are in Motor Car which is not stricken by lightning, there is also voltage increase but the highest increase is only up to 3,516 kV.
