- Root canal irrigation is necessary for cleaning the root canal from smear layer which formed while preparing the root canal. Smear layer consist of organic, inorganic and microorganism from infected pulp. Smear layer could cause root canal treatment failure especially on the apical third region of root canal which is the main focus of root canal preparation. There is no single irrigant which qualify as an ideal irrigant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 25% extract of white turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria) as an irrigation solution on apical third region of root canal cleanliness. Eighteen root samples from mandibular premolars used in this study were placed in wax block. Three groups of root samples were instrumented with protaper for hand use and irrigated as follow: group 1 with 25% extract of white turmeric, group 2 (positive control) with NaOCl 2,5% and followed by final irrigant with EDTA 17%, and group 3 (negative control) with aquadest. Each sample was cutted longitudinally and placed back in wax block, then observed by two raters using measuring microstructure microscope at 50x magnification. Measuring level of cleanliness of root canal were analyze with Kappa test, followed by Kruskal-wallis, and Mann-whitney. The results showed that there were no significant difference of cleanliness of root canal cleanliness (p>0,05) between group 1 and group 2, so it can be concluded that 25% ethanol extract of white turmeric is effective to clean the apical third region of root canal.
