  • The research objective was to determine the effect of blade rotation speeds in chopping process and material types on performance of horizontal shaft type chopper. It was conducted from August 2019 to September 2019 at Compost House, Soil Science Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this study was Factorial Randomized Block Design with two treatment factors. The first factor was blade rotation speed at three levels A1 (1200 ± 20 rpm), A2 (1300 ± 20 rpm) and A3 (1400 ± 20 rpm) and the second was material type at three levels B1 (water hyacinth), B2 (rice straw), B3 (palm leaves). Each treatment was replicated three times. The observed parameters were effective working capacity of machine (kg.h-1), efficiency of a chopper (%) and small size material percentage (%). The results showed that material types treatment had significant effect on uniformity of chopping product, effective working capacity of machine, yield and small size material percentage. The highest effective working capacity of machine was found on treatment combination (A3B3) using blade rotation speeds of 1400 ± 20 rpm and palm leaves material with magnitude of 50,45 kg.h-1. The highest small size material percentage was found on treatment combination (A3B2) using blade rotation speeds of 1400 ± 20 rpm and rice straw material with magnitude of 36,66 %. The highest efficiency of a chopper was 96,37% found on treatment combination (A3B3) using blade rotation speeds of 1400 ± 20 rpm and palm leaves material.
