- Background: Lower back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder that often occurs in medical students. This can be caused by the sitting position and the sitting duration in class. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sitting position and the sitting duration on lower back pain in students of the Medical Education Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. Sampling was done using the purposive sampling method with a total of 192 respondents students from the Study Program of Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University batch 2016, 2017 and 2018. One method for assessing lower back pain is through filling the Nordic Body Map questionnaire and the Body Awareness of Postural Habits in Young People questionnaire to assess sitting position. Results: The study showed the complaints of pain in the lower back is 59.375%, female as many as 73.4% with sitting time ≥ 7 hours in one day as many as 79.2% with bad sitting positions as many as 73.4%. From the results of chi-square tests the relationship between batch, sex, sitting position, long sitting and lower back pain is 0.257 (p> 0.05), 0.355 (p> 0.05), 0.039 (p <0.05), and 0.004 (p <0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of lower back pain is 59.4%, there is a relationship between the position and sitting duration with complaints of lower back pain in students of the Medical Education Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University.
