- Individuals with either overweight or obesity are more likely to undergo physical limitation in both functional and structural functions which consequently lead to disruption on daily activities. The disruption is caused by joint limitation especially on lower extremity that also has function as weight bearing. One of the joints on lower extremity with important function is ankle joint (articulatio talocruralis) where movements such as dorsiflexion and plantarflexion take place. Range of motion (ROM) is a measurement of maximum movement of a specific joint and purposely to assess a person’s movement capabilities and physical disturbance. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the factors that could affect ROM. The accumulation of fat around joint is suspected to interpose and obstruct inter-segmental movement. The purpose of this research is to study the correlation between BMI and ROM of ankle joint of medical student batch 2016 of Sriwijaya University. This study is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design that was conducted in Sriwijaya University from July 2019 to December 2019. There are 80 subjects on this study who meet the inclusion criteria and don’t meet the exclusion criteria. Pearson and Spearman’s correlation analysis methods are being used to analyze the data. From the analysis result, correlation between BMI and ROM (active and passive) of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion on right and left ankle joint is p>0.05. There is no correlation between BMI and ROM (active and passive) of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion on right and left ankle joint.
