  • Background. The increase in body fat and decrease in muscle mass that is not balance with sufficient physical activity can cause diseases such as obesity and sarcopenia. Body composition can be measured using the BIA tool and physical activity of the elderly can be measured by a questionnaire of the level of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between physical activity and body composition of the elderly in the elderly community of RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method. This analytic observational study with a cross-sectional study design was conducted in the elderly community of RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in October and November 2019. The sample of this study are the members of the elderly community aged over 60 years, which present when the study was conducted and willing to be a respondent and sign the informed consent. Also the elderly can communicate and do daily activities. Physical activity data were obtained through interviews based on the PASE questionnaire and body consumption measurements using the BIA Tanita. The analyses were performed with Chi-Square test. Results. In this study, there were 94 elderly people consisting of 12 men and 82 women. There was a significant relationship between physical activity and muscle mass (p = 0,001). There was a significant relationship between physical activity and fat mass (p = 0,001). Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between physical activity and body composition in the elderly.
