  • The factors that cause some problems in Indonesia are the high birth rate and population density. This is due to the limited methods of male contraception which are safe, comfortable and inexpensive. One of the alternative methods for male contraception is utilizing the compound contents of papaya seeds (Carica papaya L.). The purpose of this research is to assess the effectiveness of papaya seed extract on the sperm motility and viability of male rats (Rattus norvegicus) in vitro. Papaya seeds were extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol. Papaya seed extract concentrations used were 0.03%, 0.05% and 0.07%. PBS solvents are physiological solutions for sperm as negative controls. Calculation of the number of motility and viability of sperm on 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes of 200 sperm. The results showed the number of motility and viability are decrease which the smallest rat sperm at a concentration of 0.03% and the largest at a concentration of 0.07%. According to the research, Increasing the concentration of papaya seed extract will decrease the amount of rat sperm (one-way ANOVA = p <0.05). Papaya seed extract (Carica papaya L.) is effective to reduce the amount of motility and viability of sperm of male rats (Rattus norvegicus) in vitro.
