PERBANDINGAN EFEK JUS MENTIMUN DENGAN KLORHEKSIDIN 0,12% TERHADAP INDEKS DAN pH PLAK GIGI
Daftar Isi:
- Dental plaque contributes to the development of dental caries. Mouthwash can be used to reduce dental plaque. Chlorhexidine is a gold standard mouthwash, but with certain limitations. Cucumber juice is known to have antibacterial effect and to neutralize pH with minimal side effects. Hence, it is considered as an alternative mouthwash. This study aimed to compare plaque index and pH after rinsing with cucumber juice and 0,12% chlorhexidine. The experimental study which used pretest-posttest with control group design was conducted on 32 students of Al-Amalul Khair Boarding School aged 12-15 years, modification of Turesky-Gillmore-Glickmann from Quigley-Hein plaque index ≥1,5, and saliva pH ≥7. Subjects were randomized equally into two groups which were instructed to rinse with 10 ml of the assigned mouthwash. Before conducting the study, they were asked to refrain from oral hygiene procedures for 24 hours. Supragingival plaque index and pH were measured before and after rinsing. Plaque index was measured by using modification of Turesky-Gillmore- Glickmann from Quigley-Hein index, whereas plaque pH was measured by using digital pH meter. Paired and independent t test were used for statistical analysis. Results showed that plaque index decreased significantly after rinsing with cucumber juice or 0,12% chlorhexidine (p<0,05), but there was no significant difference between the groups (p>0,05). There was no statistically significant increase in plaque pH in both group (p>0,05), but the difference between two groups was statistically significant (p<0,05). It can be concluded that cucumber juice can decrease plaque index, but it is not effective to increase plaque pH.
