  • The Fishing activities are a way to know and utilize a potential fish resources in the sea. It can be optimized by utilizing the monitoring technology of fishing activities conducted by a fishing vessel. The purpose of this research is to know composition of fish and fishing area by purse seine ship WPP 571 based on data Vessel Monitoring System (VMS). The research was conducted in June - July 2016 at Ocean Port of Belawan, North Sumatera. The type of data used is primary data and secondary data. The data is sourced from a sample of purse seine vessels with GT > 30 based at Ocean Port of Belawan. For fish catches purse seine with GT > 30 consists of small pelagic fish species. There are 7 species of fish caught with 77,6% composition of Selayang (Decapterus spp), 7,6% of Tongkol (Auxis rochei), 4,1% of Kembung (Restrelliger spp) and followed by Selar of (Selar spp) 3,1%, Teri (Stelophorus spp) as much as 2,1%, Tembang (Sardinella fimbriata) 1% and Layur (Trichiurus spp) which has the lowest percentage of 0.1% and their get a mixed fish as mush as 4,5 % from all fidh caught. Fishing activities utilizing Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data recording in WPP 571 capture positions by purse seine ship spread over 60 miles toward Territorial waters and ZEE Strait of Malacca and that location on 3050’30” LU to 99023’35”BT . Distribution of the position of the fishing area is in a fixed area so that the predicted search of the catching area in accordance with the location of the rumpon. The catch with the capture area position indicates that WPP 571 belongs to a region with very small pelagic fish resources.
