  • Beluntas leaves have properties as antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemia, antioxidants, antibacterial, and analgesic. The results of the screening of the chemical content showed that leaves of beluntas contained alcaloid, flavonoid, tanin, saponin, phenolic, and steroid. The safety of using beluntas leaves as a natural medicinal ingredient must be supported by toxicity testing. In this study an acute toxicity test of ethanol extract of beluntas leaves (Pluchea indica L.) was conducted on male white rats of Wistar strain using fixed dose procedure. Ethanol extract of beluntas leaves was obtained by maceration using 70% ethanol. The initial dose chosen for the main test is determined from the results of the preliminary test. Based on the results of the preliminary test the dose of 2000 mg/kgBW was determined as the dose in the main test. In the main test, the test animals were divided into 2 groups, normal control group and 2000 mg/kgBW dose group, each of which used 5 test animals. The results of observations in the main test showed that there were no deaths or toxic symtoms in the test animals. The toxic dose range of the ethanol extract of beluntas leaves which caused acute toxicity is >2000 mg/kgBW, so it was classified as practically non toxic. Ethanol extract of beluntas leaves at a dose of 2000 mg/kgBW had no effect on the macroscopic organs of the liver, kidneys, and hearts of the test animals (p>0,05). The average level of biochemical parameters in the normal control group was SGOT 102,839±26,004 U/L, SGPT 88,158±17,276 U/L, creatinine 0,679±0,095 mg/dL, ureum 18,014±2,244 mg/dL. While the 2000 mg/kgBW dose group is SGOT 117,590±42,688 U/L, SGPT 96,060±11,475 U/L, creatinine 0,657±0,069 mg/dL, dan ureum 19,720±2,093 mg/dL.
