  • This research aims to determine the best method of kiln drum in the palm shells charcoal carbonization fabrication using single and double drum methods. It was conducted at Chemical Engineering Department of Engineering Faculty of Sriwijaya University on September until December 2016. The research method using a completely randomized block design (CRBD) with four treatments and three repetitions. Each treatments showed different temperature and time of combustion. This research was conducted with the carbonization process and analysis in laboratorium. The observed parameter were carbon content, moisture content, ash content, volatile matter and yield. Charcoal making use palm shells as a carbonization drum. The drum is divided into four treatments, each treatment has a different diameter both for single drum or double drum. The carbonization process propellant used are palm shells and sawdust. The temperature and time of combustion affect the result of carbonization. The higher the temperature and the longer the time of combustion, the higher carbon content and the lower moisture content. The results showed that the best charcoal fabrication carbonization obtained in a single treatment of small diameter drum with a carbon content of 89.62%, water content of 0.2%, ash content of 4.29%, volatile matter of 5.26% and yield of 45, 89%. The results showed that the method of carbonization kiln drum for each treatments meets the standards for activated charcoal.
