  • Vernonia amygdalina Delile (African leaf) is a traditional medicine of the Asteraceae family. Phytochemical screening of secondary metabolites of African leaf plant’s root showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and terpenoids. This research aimed to isolate the secondary metabolite compounds from the roots of African leaf plants. The method of extraction was done by multilevel maceration and the separation of secondary metabolite compounds was done by column chromatography and thin layer chromatographytechnique. Pure compound in the form of white colored crystals as much as 11 mgwas obtained. The structure of the compound was determined based on the data analysis of UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HSQC spectrophotometric and also by comparing the data obtained from the literature. Based on the analysis, the isolated compound is belong to triterpenoid group specifically 3ß-OH Lupeol.
