  • Background: Dental caries was a breakdown process of tooth’s hard issues such as enamel, dentin and sementum. Basic health research (RISKESDAS) at 2018 in South Sumatera Province saw an increase in the prevalence of dental and mouth problems by 52.4%. Risk factors of dental caries can be influenced by socioeconomic. The purpose of this study was to asses the differences of the DMFT index of 12-years-old students between urban and rural areas in the city of Palembang. Method: Analytic observational with cross-sectional design. The research sample was taken with a total sampling technique in SMPN students in urban areas,SMPN 9 and rural area in SMPN 12 Palembang as a case study. The subjects taken were 32 students each with a total of 64 students. The differences of the DMFT index between urban and rural areas by using the Independent Sample T-Test. Results: The study showed the DMFT index in urban and rural areas was 1.7 and 2.7 respectively with the p value obtained was <0.05. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the DMFT index values in urban and rural areas. Conclusion: The DMFT index in rural areas was higher than the DMFT index in urban areas.
