- Background: Oral health problems are health problems that occur due to lack of public awareness in maintaining health. Periodontal disease is one of the teeth and mouth disease that currently has a high attack rate in Indonesia. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process caused by bacteria of the periodontal tissues. World Health Organization (WHO) set a school and adolescents aged 12 to 15 can be used as an important target group for examination and oral health promotion. CPITN is an index that is used for treatment of periodontal point in providing information about the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can be affected by several factors such as socioeconomic, region of residence, as well as toothbrushing behavior. WHO divided residential areas into two categories: urban and rural. Urban is urban areas while rural is a rural or suburban area. The purpose of this study was to compare the status and treatment needs of periodontal tissue suffered by students aged 15 years in SMAN 3 and SMAN 9 Palembang. Methods: The study was observational analytic with cross-sectional design. samples are students of SMAN 3 and SMAN 9 Palembang who was 15 years old and willing to do the examination, Status and treatment needs of periodontal tissues was measured using an index Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). Analysis of data using the Mann Whitney. Results: The results of the analysis obtained Mann Whitney test p-value of 0.000 (p <0.05), which showed significant differences in periodontal tissue treatment needs between students in SMA 3 and SMA Negeri 9 Palembang. Conclusion: Status and treatment needs of periodontal tissue which suffered 15 years of age students in SMAN 3 lower than students in SMAN 9.
