- Chicken egg shells contains calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Calcium in the chicken egg shells can be used in hydroxyapatite synthesis. The aim of this research is to determine the magnetic properties with varying ratio of hydroxyapatite-Fe3O4 composite, and the effect of PEG-4000 addition to magnetic properties of hydroxyapatite-Fe3O4 composite. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite was performed by sol-gel method, with the phosphate precursor was H3PO4. The hydroxyapatite precipitate is heated at 900 °C for 2 hours to obtain the hydroxyapatite crystalline. Hydroxyapatite characterized by XRD showed the highest peak at 2θ = 31,856 with an intensity value of 479. The FTIR spectrum of the hydroxyapatite characterization have identified P-O of PO43- groups and O-H of OH- groups, and no carbonat group is present. The surface morphology of hydroxyapatite results in the form of granular grains in uniform size. Hydroxyapatite was composed with Fe3O4 and PEG-4000 as templates with ratio variation 1: 1; 2: 1; 3: 1; 4: 1. The magnetic properties of hydroxyapatite-Fe3O4 composite is characterized using VSM. The results show the hydroxyapatite-Fe3O4 1:1 composite has the best magnetic properties with a Ms value of 78.76 emu/g; while and the hydroxyapatite-PEG- Fe3O4 1:1 composite has a Ms value of 74.76 emu/g. The highest magnetic values of the VSM are then characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS. Addition of PEG-4000 increased Fe3O4 content in the composite material, decreasing particle size by preventing particle aggregation, and decreasing the magnetic properties of hydroxyapatite-Fe3O4 composite.
