  • The objective of the research was to determine the effect of biomass as drying energy source for unhulled rice drying on rotary dryer. The research used experimental method with A1 treatment was coconut shell and A2 treatment was palm oil midrib. The result showed that drying with 20 kg of paddy used palm oil midrib biomass was capable to produce temperature of drying chamber to 52.37 °C in average, relative humidity of drying chamber was 40.29 %, the final moisture was 13.6 % w.b in average, drying rate to 2.38 % d.b in average, total paddy drying energy was 7,257.17 kJ with 3 hours of drying. Paddy drying with coconut shell biomass was capable to generate temperature of drying chamber to 53.26 °C in average, relative humidity of drying chamber was 45.01 %, the final moisture was 14.1 % w.b in average, drying rate to 2.76 % d.b in average, total paddy drying energy was 7,143.86 kJ with 2 hours of drying. The best quality of paddy was showed by drying result used palm oil midrib with the amount of head rice was 78.79 %, broken rice was 14.32 %, and brewers rice was 5.33 %. The drying with coconut shell biomass was capable to produce the amount of head rice was 57.13 %, broken rice was 14.32 %, and brewers rice was 5.05%.
